Scenic Virginia

Our Work: What We’ve Done

Organized stakeholders, individuals, and local organizations toward the preservation of “The View that Named Richmond,” the historic panoramic view at Libby Hill in Richmond, Virginia.

Partnered with the Southern Environmental Law Center to develop recommendations for improving VDOT’s Tourist-Oriented Directional Signage (TODS) program.

Served as project coordinator and successfully sponsored State legislation designating Virginia’s four federal parkways as Virginia Byways.

Coordinated the multi-year, multi-agency effort to bring the National Scenic Byways® program to Virginia, resulting in federal scenic designation for the Blue Ridge Parkway, Colonial Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, and Skyline Drive.

Successfully lobbied for the creation of new riverfront zoning in Richmond, Virginia, helping residents of the Oregon Hill community preserve historic river views.

Helped to review and revise legislation governing billboard design and placement on the municipal and state level.

Assisted Scenic America with the development of a white paper called Taking the Long View: A Proposal for Realizing America the Beautiful. The document has five focus areas: Preserving Community Character, Honoring Parks and Open Spaces, Celebrating Byways and Gateways, Encouraging Appropriate Utility and Telecommunications Infrastructure, and Promoting Beautiful Highways.

Assisted the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation in the development of Scenic Resources to create the Virginia Outdoors Plan, the Commonwealth’s guidebook for outdoor recreation.

Served on the advisory committee on the Virginia Department of Transportation and their design and implementation of a Scenic Roads map and website.
